Multi-threading

We are using what I think is an older version of Informix (our manuals say version 7.2). Currently, I'm tyring to use informix-esql/c to interface a multi-threaded server with our Informix database. I'm having a great deal of trouble and - after spelunking through the manuals - I'm getting the impression that it can't be done. I'm I wrong in this assumption ? Is there a way multiple threads can open and use simultaneous connections with the Informix database server ? I saw that multiple connections can be opened, but it appears as though only one connection can be active at a time. Also, there are warnings all over the place regarding concurrent connections and dead-locks.
