Yes, the update stats has been run and I've tried adding/dropping indexes etc. The problem relates to the selectivity of a join expression used by SE i.e. '<expr> = <expr>' has a cost of 1/10 of the rows of the table. Online uses the number distinct keys in the (larger) table if the columns are indexed. Probably no (simple) solution apart from changing to Online.
