Looks like the previous replies are only trying to sell you something instead of telling you something uesful. I have actually attempted to use the Informix Java API and have had similarly useless replies to questions about it in this news group. The API does work, but not well. Cons: 1. It is poorly documented and there is not really anyone out there that seems to be an expert on it. I never could get it to update a TEXT BLOB column. 2. It's buggy. The middle tier RMI server could be easily crashed by an error in a client program. Bad News. 3. It's non-standard. It has nothing to do with JDBC. I gave it up for Borland's DataGateway (which unfortunately has a middle tier that must run under MSWin -- see below). Pros: 1. Its fast. It's a three tier deal with a Java RMI server running on your database host machine. For me, it was nice because the RMI server ran under Solaris which is much faster than having the middle tier on a Wintel box. 2. One feature that JDBC does not have is Query.execToSet() which returns mulitple rows of data in one (fast) chunk, instead of looping through a ResultSet 3. It's pure Java. No client side configuration is required, just a few extra (downloadable for applets) class files. Thats my $0.02. Maybe in a couple years Informix will really have something here, but I don't think it's ready for prime time. --Jeff Larsen On Sun, 15 Feb 1998 14:08:08 +0200, Lauri Pietarinen <lauri.pietarinen@atbusiness.com> wrote: > We are looking for a JDBC-driver for Informix and came across the > "Informix Java API" in the cd-rom > INFORMIX CLIENT PRODUCTS VERSION 2.0 > FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS ENVIRONMENTS > DATE: 11/7/97 > > Can any one explain to me how this compares to "standard JDBC"? > What will I lose/win by using this interface.
