How to adjust the network window size

Hi all, How can we check and adjust the network window size? Window size is the number of messages sent before an acknowledgement. This is typically a 1:1 ratio, but we can improve its performance by increasing the size to say 5. How can we accomplish this in UNIX TCP/IP settings?
