Migration to Smart blobs
Posted in 2006
Kenneth needed to migrate ~20 GB of BYTE (simple blob) data from Informix 7 to BLOB smart large objects in sbspaces on IDS 10, and asked how to convert the actual data, not just the storage definitions. After advice to read the admin/migration manuals on sbspace sizing and metadata, Gerd Kaluzinski gave the working answer: upgrade first keeping the old datatypes (in place or via dbexport/dbimport), then create a new table with BLOB columns and do INSERT INTO new_tab SELECT ..., f_byte::blob, ... FROM old_tab, as the cast converts the data automatically. Kenneth confirmed this solved his problem.

People,
I am currently involved in the migration of a system that that included blobs
from Informix 7 to 10. Currently we are using columns of type byte to store
data. With the migration to Informix 10, we intend to move to smart blobs. Can
anyone suggest to me a way to migrate circa 20G of data from byte columns to
blobs ( in smartblob spaces). The upgrade to Informix 10 will be done using
dbexport/dbimport or HPL.
Regards
Kenneth
Hi Kenneth,
A smart blobspace dbspace and chunks are quite
different of a blobspace, you have to consider disk
space for you metadata and other performance options.
I would recommend you first to read the Admin manual
and play a bit with the parameters to create a smart
space.
Take a deep look at the migration guide then.
hope this helps you,
esteban.-

Actually I have checked the documentation and we are looking in the different
options related to smartblob spaces. What I did not figure out is how to
perform the data type migration from byte to blob (not as regards to storage
and create statements, but for the actual data stored in the byte columns).
Thanks and Regards

Migrate with your old datatypes (InPlace or using dbexport/dbimport).
In Version 10 create a new table with the same structure as your tables with
BYTE-Columns.
Then use the internal conversion like:
insert into new_tab
select f1, f2, ... f_byte::blob, ...
from old_tab
The Cast "::blob" automaticly converts the byte data to blob data.
This was we converted a lot of old ducuments to be able to use excalibur on
them.

Gerd,
Thanks very much you, I can now move byte columns to blob columns in smartblob
spaces.
Thanks again

Not sure that many people currently use smart blobs.
Yoy may have to create an esql/c program to do the unload/load.
Otherwise talk to the vendor for the DataBlade that implements the smart
blobs.
Perhaps they have some tools to assist?
