I believe that all the TPC benchmarks using Informix are run with mode ANSI databases to reach the ACID (atomicity, consistency, isolation and durability) requirements, but benchmark database configurations are very different from production databases. I was talking about run-of-the-mill production databases, and for those I would not normally use a mode ANSI database without a very good reason. One very good reason might be that the user required the same ACID properties as the TPC benchmarks, though a database with unbuffered logging meets most of the same requirements (except for implicit transactions). I have had messages from a number of people indicating that they have had considerable success using mode ANSI databases, and that they view my reaction as an over-reaction. That is reassuring to me; maybe mode ANSI isn't as bad as I think it is. However, I can only offer my view, which remains that I wouldn't use mode ANSI unless I had to. >If so, and you "wouldn't touch a MODE ANSI database", why does Informix >publish so many ads showing the number of TPC-C benchmarks they have run ? My standard signature line shows that the views I express in this group do not necessarily represent those of Informix as a company. I assume that Informix publishes the ads because it shows that more computer manufacturers have chosen to run TPC-C benchmarks using Informix as the database server than any other database server, and that this suggests that, in some respects, Informix has a performance advantage over other database companies. >I am curious as to how many Informix users run their database in mode=ANSI ? >Can anyone comment on this ? I do not have any information on this. Yours, Jonathan Leffler (johnl@informix.com) #include <disclaimer.h>
