Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Not a technical problem at all: a poster claims Sybase's newsgroup activity shows it is faring worse than Informix. The thread is pure banter about Usenet post counts, who posts most in comp.databases.informix, and whether traffic says anything about a product's market health. Side discussion covers Sybase's decline after moving from its core database business, Oracle's migration push, and Serge Rielau noting DB2 V7.1 added Sybase-friendly features (identity columns, SQL PL, global temp tables, a migration toolkit). No technical issue, so no resolution recorded.

Not sure they are in worse shape - they have less posts, but none from
the people below (posts this month to date). So presumably overall
quality is a little higher ....

I think you're being a bit unfair to Fernando, he does post useful stuff
some of the time.

Quite telling about the Informix market in general. The most traffic is
coming from people trying to talk about improving Informix marketing and
getting Informix out there combined with people telling them to shut up
about Informix marketing. c.d.i... As dysfunctional as ever.

Thanks... you almost made me cry ;) Some of your posts are not bad also...
I wouldn't mind to outsource some of our posters to help a fellow database
product in danger!
But really... are we measuring anything based on Usenet? eheheheh...
I think we could use usenet for social/medical studying, not for maketing :)

Now that's funny.
Sybase had been going downhill since they moved away from their core
database business.
Also there were problems in their adaptive server technology.
Want to kill performance across the entire server? Implement a poorly
written embedded C app.
I wonder why IBM never tried to implement a Sybase take out strategy.
Oracle did and it was pretty successful to a point. There are still a
couple of hard core sybase shops hanging around. Most however have
since moved on and off the platform except for legacy systems. I just
spoke with a friend at a former client and a system I wrote (C++ and
Sybase) just was taken off line. The application has been running
uninterrupted since '98. Seems they lost the source code...

That was before your time at IBM. DB2 V7.1 was all about Sybase:
IDENTITY columns, SQL PL procedures, inline SQL PL, Global Temp Tables,
Sybase migration toolkit.
Sitting in class right now teaching several Wallstreet customers DB2
Vnext. So, can't complain about lack of success to get them over and
stick with us.
Cheers
