I had exactly the same problem during installation. It turned out that my NT machine name was different from the network name assigned by DNS - I'm new to NT and it was kind of discovery for me. As soon as I've changed host name to the one assigned on network, the problem was solved. I could also reproduce this later, when I've changed the network name (I'm not sure about terms, my apologies to the gurus :) once again, I had to match NT hostname to make Informix work.
