I have installed Informix-SE on a minimal Debian system.
Here are a few notes to make it work.
1) The first attempt to run dbaccess will complain about
not finding your terminal.
Solution: Add a tag 'linux' to the first 'ansi' entry found
in $INFORMIXDIR/etc/termcap and copy the file to /etc
2) Second attempt with error 25596 "The INFORMIXSERVER is not listed..."
Solution: Edit $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts and copy the line
that start with 'demo-se' and change demo-se to the name
of your own instance (eg: test). Also change the 'on_hostname'
to your own host name (get it by excuting 'hostname').
( Note: I did not need to edit '/etc/services'.)
3) Compiling the demo 'unload.ec' will complain about a crypt not found.
Solution 1: Compile with '-lcrypt' since one is supplied with Debian.
Solution 2: Edit the script $INFORMIXDIR to include the 'libcrypt' library
when compiling. Here is a 'diff' output of my own changes.
( Note: I did not test the -static compile yet.)

I hope this will help somebody.
