What SOA facilities are available?
Posted in 2010
A user asked what products can be used to build, deploy and host web services against Informix 11.x on Linux or Windows, beyond Informix 4GL 7.50 and Data Studio. No single "answer" was needed — the thread is a list of options: any tool that connects via JDBC/ODBC/.NET/PHP PDO will work; Data Studio can generate code for WebSphere, WebSphere CE/Geronimo and Tomcat; plain Java JDK+JDBC with NetBeans and GlassFish; the in-database "Solano" mini app server (not recommended); Querix Lycia and 4Js Genero for exposing/consuming web services from 4GL and web-enabling whole 4GL apps; and Aubit4GL via gsoap. It was noted IBM 4GL 7.50 can publish and consume non-interactive services but cannot web-enable a full 4GL application. The poster thanked the group.

Hello, friends! I´d like to know what products are available do build, deploy and host web services that connects to IBM Informix 11.X, either on Linux, or even on Windows platforms. I already know of: Informix 4gl 7.50.X DataStudio - what products will be needed to host the webservices? (Websphere Application Server???) .. some other? Thanks a lot.
Hello Alexandre. Well, the answer is a bit generic. Any tool that can generate web services will probably work with Informix. Typically web services will access the database using JDBC or some other database connectivity layer like OleDB, .NET, PHP's PDO etc. DataStudio can also generate code for other application servers beside WAS, like WebSphere Community Edition, former Geronimo and Tomcat. You can also look into the Rational development portfolio. Technically you can also run web services inside the database. Look for something called Solano. It's a small app server inside the database. I would not advise doing this... Regards. Take a serious look at Querix's Lycia. It can deploy existing 4GL code unmodified as a web application or applet and has extensions to simply call SOA web services from 4GL code or publish 4GL functions as SOA web services very easily. Java JDK + JDBC You can make java webservices in plain text, compile and run. http://www.java-tips.org/java-ee-tips/java-api-for-xml-web-services/developing-w eb-services-using-j.html If you want and IDE, NetBeans can help very well. If you want to deploy something more complicated, can deploy on Glassfish. And many many more. All of them runns on Linux, windows, Solaris and other OS. Thanks a lot for your suggestions! Best Regards.
Just to extend on the Informix 4GL 7.50 capabilities. It can also help you to consume to a web-service. The system will generate the code to call a web-service (deployment is also feasible). Overall, one product which serves for multiple purposes. Ramesh. Just for reference - Aubit4GL can do this too... We use "gsoap" to generate the web services - and can automatically export all (or just some) of the functions within a 4gl ... We can also create marshalling code for accessing (using) *simple* non4gl derived web services.. That is true. IBM Informix 4GL 7.50+ can publish and consume web services that do not interact with a user (ie you cannot have PROMPT, INPUT, CONSTRUCT, or DISPLAY calls in such a service). What it cannot do is push and entire 4GL application, unmodified, onto a web pages as a widget or to publish the application itself as a full web page. Querix's Lycia can do that without having to modify the 4GL source. 4J's Genero can let you port such an application to the web in its entirety by making some modifications to the source (not extensive BTW). Both will let you modernize the interface of the application to make it mouse friendly and to add graphical widgets. Querix can do this at multiple levels from creating configuration files that the Lycia thin client reads at runtime, to converting the 4GL forms to graphical forms, to adding function calls to the 4GL source. 4Js' Genero has similar features but taking advantage of GUI features requires more source modification than Querix's Lycia. Unfortunately, IBM's Informix 4GL does not have this capability TMK. Art Art S.
