Upgrade question
Posted in 2008
User upgrading Informix 9.3 to 11.10 on new hardware wanted to restore backups to different dataspaces. Expert clarified that archives cannot be restored across versions. Recommended either in-place upgrade followed by moving tables to new dbspaces, or exporting data from 9.3 and importing into fresh 11.10 instance. Suggested using myexport/myimport utility with HPLoader and parallel processing for faster migration.

We are attempting to do an upgrade of hardware and software at the same time (Informix 9.3 to 11.10). We wish to change the dataspaces (and chunks) to take advantage of the new server abilities. What is the preferred method people use to backup and restore the DATABASE to the new server? We have netbackup but it seems to require the restore to be to the same dataspace name. I created the new schema's in the new spaces but I do not want to do manual unloads and loads. Even using ipload it would take some time. We wish to have minimal time (and mistakes) during the final cut over. Suggestions are welcome and thanked in advance! Tim Ertl 413-442-9000 x6211
Please post your hardware specs as well. Sun? Linux? HP? AIx? Microsoft? Are u doing anything fancy with your backups to netbackup or just standard level-0? And disk level things like EMC BCVs/mirrors that could be useful? ----- Original Message ----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org <ids-bounces@iiug.org> To: ids@iiug.org <ids@iiug.org> Sent: Mon Jul 14 17:52:03 2008 Subject: Upgrade question [12690] We are attempting to do an upgrade of hardware and software at the same time (Informix 9.3 to 11.10). You CANNOT restore an archive from one version into another version of IDS.
It won't work.
You either have to perform an in-place upgrade from 9.3 to 11.10 or export
the data from 9.3, create a new 11.10 instance with the new dbspaces and
chunks and the import the data.
Obviously, the in-place upgrade will leave you with the same dbspaces and
chunks you had originally. The solution for that is to enable large chunks
in the instance after the upgrade (onmode -BC 2) then create new dbspaces
using larger chunks and possibly larger page sizes, and move tables,
indexes, and fragments thereof to the new dbspaces. Eventually you may be
able to drop many of the original dbspaces (though likely not any dbspace
containing a database's system catalog tables.

Hi Sebastian, I am leaving Sun Enterprise 250 (32 bit Sparc) Solaris 8
informix 9.30, going to Sun T5120 (64 bit Sparc) Solaris 10 Informix
11.10 and more disk drives to spread out the I/O!.
The migration guide suggest dbexport/dbimport but I wonder if there is a
better way.

Get my dbexport/dbimport replacement utility, myexport. It can use the
HPLoader to export and import your data and it can do all tables in parallel
for maximum throughput. To use myexport you will also need my utils2_ak
package for my dbschema replacement utility myschema, Jonathan Leffler's
sqlcmd utility (which myexport/myimport uses by default for moving data),
and Ravi Krishna's myonpload utility that lets myexport/myimport run the
HPLoader from the commandline.
For fastest loading use the -p (parallel), -C (HPLoader), and -m (create
indexes and constraints after the load) options for myexport and -p, -H D
(HPLoader in deluxe mode), and -m for myimport. Myimport can also create
the database and load the tables into different dbspaces than they were
exported from using the -T <mapfile> option. See the README.1st file and
the sample mapping files in the package.

Art, wow! the myexport stuff lead me into its requirements that are a whole
bunch of neat Informix programs. Great stuff! We should have had a session
at the IIUG about non-IBM user utilities!
In anycase the utils2_ak had an issue I do not see a fix for in the
Makefile.

If you have any quick thoughts on this problem I welcome the help.

Tim,
as you have seen, Art has given great suggestions.
One thing you didn't mention is if your informix version is going 64

to 64, so why not do it with your informix too?
I think you may have some wiggle room short of the dbexport/dbimport,...
The devil is in the details and depends if you have test servers you can
experiment with before go-live.....
I remember doing this several years back on Sun, I don't remember all
the details, but we did not dbexport/dbimport.

Sounds like you don't have, or at least are not using, GNU Make. The
makefile has to be edited to work with std UNIX make. On line 71 or so
there's a conditional block like:
ifeq ($(ESQL),c4gl)
cpp -DC4GL_720_COMPILER=1 $? >$@_4gl.ec
INFORMIXC=$(INFORMIXC) $(ESQL) $(ECFLAGS) -o $@ $@_4gl.ec
rm $@_4gl.ec
else
INFORMIXC=$(INFORMIXC) $(ESQL) $(ECFLAGS) -o $@ $?endif
Just remove everything except the line immediately above the endif (or use
GNU Make). You'll have to edit the myschema makefile also and make the same
change there. That's the file myschema.mk.norcs in the myschema.d
subdirectory.
Oh, unless the update went in today (I uploaded it a week ago but it wasn't
there as of yesterday), the copy you have may have a compile time bug in the
file myschema.d/print_procedures.ec. Updated version is attached, just
replace the one you have with this new one.

Norma Jean Sebastian,
Yes on the upgrade to 64bits we are going to 64bit Informix. We were
9.30.UC1 32 bit and I am going to 11.10.FC2 which is 64bits.
The 64bit server is a brand new server and I am doing all sorts of testing
on it. The export needs to come from the production 32bit system sooner or
later but I am trying this on the new server first. At the moment the
utils2_ak Makefile seems to have some sort of odd error/or/dependency in it.
We do not do upgrades in place so I can usually get a server to test on. Sun
had a 45% off try and buy program that was too good to be true.

Hi Tim,
Here's a thought. Is your 32bit informix certified to run on that new
server? (they are both sparc) I don't have a link for the support
matrix. You could install Informix 9.30.UC1 on the 64bit server (32bit
software should be fine on 64bit o/s). If that is possible, you now
have informix 9.30.UC1 on both sparc machines (Sun Enterprise 250 & Sun
T5120). You could set up the chunks on new server the same or different
than old server, just have the links in place to support the 9.30 setup
and enough space to take the restore. Run the IDS 9.30 restore to the
new server. Now you are in an inplace upgrade situation. Again, I
don't have a link to any matrix in front of me, can you go directly from
IDS 9.30 to 11.10? My memory is fuzzy, point your environment to the
new binaries and start her up?.... Even if I am wrong, you are playing
on a test server, it might be worth a try....
I could be way off base, so it's good to pursue Art's method as well
(he's likely right on target).....
Enjoy the experiment :-)
