For the sake of discussion, I will assume you are using a Microsoft tools which requires ODBC. You will need to set up your Informix server with entries in /etc/hosts, /etc/services, $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts and $INFORMIXDIR/etc/onconfig files. These will all be documented in your OnLine documentation. You will then need an ODBC driver. Some of these drivers require Informix-Net or Informix-CLI or Informix-Connect (all of which are largely the same thing - Informix PC connectivity software). Some drivers (SCO's SQL Retriever and OpenLink) do *not* require the Informix PC connectivity software. If you do use Informix PC connectivity software, you will have to configure a utility called SetNet. Once you have set up Informix as an ODBC data source, you should be on your way. Alternatively, products like Delphi have "native" Informix drivers, but I don't have their client side config off the top of my head.
