Create Another Instance On The Same Server
Posted in 2010
A newcomer wanted a second IDS 10 instance (a training instance) alongside an existing test instance on one Solaris box. Replies explained that both instances can share INFORMIXDIR if they run the same version; what must differ is INFORMIXSERVER/DBSERVERNAME (and any aliases), SERVERNUM, the ONCONFIG file (e.g. onconfig.<servername>), the root dbspace/ROOTPATH, plus separate sqlhosts and /etc/services entries. After an initial failure (error 908, instance wouldn't initialize), the poster got it working by adjusting SHMVIRTSIZE; Art Kagel also noted the environment script must be sourced with a dot (. ./.training) rather than run as a subshell.

First post to the forum and new to Informix.
I recently Installed Informix Dynamic Server 10.FC5 on a server running
Solaris 10 (Sparc) which is being used as a test environment for our
developers. The test environment is a replica of our production environment
with the execption that the production system used raw files compared to test
which is used cooked files. I have now been asked to create a small training
environment on the same server that our test environemnt runs on this time
using 15G of spare space in the /usr directory.
What changes need to be made to create another instance?
Here is what I have done so far:
Created a new entry in the sqlhost file for the training instance:
idstraining ontlitcp Intranet idstraining
Made a copy of the test instance onconfig file (what changes would be
required?)
Added an entry in the /etc/services file (currently set to)
idstest 1525/tcp # Informix tcp port
idstraining 1530/tcp # Informix tcp port
Below is a copy of my current environment - do I need to create another
environment file? if so how do I create it and get the system to use it for
the new instance.
$ grep INF | env
_=/usr/bin/env
HZ=100DBSERVERNAME=idstest
PATH=/usr/bin::/usr/informix/binEDITOR=vi
INFORMIXSQLHOSTS=/usr/informix/etc/sqlhostsLOGNAME=informix
DBCENTURY=C
MAIL=/usr/mail/informix
DB_LOCALE=en_us.utf8TERMCAP=/usr/informix/wyse60.tc
SHELL=/usr/bin/ksh
SERVERNUM=59
HOME=/export/home/informix
INFORMIXDIR=/usr/informix
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/informix/libTERM=wyse60
ONCONFIG=onconfig.IntranetPWD=/usr/informix/etc
TZ=Australia/Queensland
INFORMIXSERVER=idstest
Ideally I would like to be able to switch between instances idstest and
idstraining using oninit.
If the above is way of the mark then how do I go about creating such an
environment that allows both instances to run on the same server.
Any help appreciated
Yes. You have to create an environment that diferenciates one instance
from another.
For instance, in one of my systems, i have a default 9.40 instance whith
configuracion on directory /usr1/informix and a 10.50
on /usr1/informix1150. The default .profile of informix executes
. /usr1/informix/.informixrcInst01
which has this lines
INFORMIXDIR=/usr1/informix
INFORMIXSERVER=nacional_net
INFORMIXC=gcc
ONCONFIG=onconfigDBTEMP=/usr1/informix/tmp
among others.
I can start up the default 9.40 instance on this environment.
But, when I want to init the 11.50 instance, then i execute
. /usr1/informix1150/.informixrcInst02
whith the lines
INFORMIXDIR=/usr1/informix1150
INFORMIXSERVER=nacional2_net
INFORMIXC=gcc
ONCONFIG=onconfig2DBTEMP=/usr1/informix1150/tmp
which defines the environment to another instance.
Now. As you have the same version for both instances, your INFORMIXDIR
will be the same. The main difference will be defined by the ONCONFIG
environment symbol.
Be cautious with your dbspaces in order to not damage the production
database.

To support multiple instances on a single machine the following must be
different:
Environment:
INFORMIXSERVER=<new server's name> # for starting the instance and forusers that want access to it.
ONCONFIG file (it is common to name the ONCONFIG file
onconfig.<servername>):
DBSERVERNAMEDBSERVERALIASES (if you have any server alias names for multiple connection
protocols)
SERVERNUM <must be different for each server instance>
ROOTDBS <each server must have its own root dbspace>
All other parameters can be the same or different.
You should be using the latest Informix release: 11.50xC6W3 or later.

You would only require a different INFORMIXDIR if each instance is to be
running a different version of Informix. As long as they are running the
same version, they can share the INFORMIXDIR and associated environment
variables like LD_LIBRARY_PATH, PATH, etc..

Thanks for the responses. I'm my original post I stated that I would like to
switch between instances using oninit which wasn't quiet accurate. Can someone
verify if the following is possible and if so does that change anything with
the configuration not already metioned in the previous replies.
I have created a executable file called training that contains all environmet
vairables for the training instance ie onconfig, servernum, servername etc.
Added new entry to sqlhosts file.
Copied test onconfig file to create training onconfig file and change a few
parameters.
Added entry to etc/services file.
The /usr directory has 15gb of free space where I have created a root dbspace
and chunk and also a database dbspace and chunk. The majority of space is in
the database chunk as this is where I want to house the data.
Now when I log into the test environment I run .training to take me to the
correct environment. I then use dbaccess and have the option to connect to
idstest or idstraining. When selecting idstraining I get message 908: cannot
connect to database server idstraining.
Have I missed any steps?
How can I connect to the training environment without bringing down the test
database?
Hope this makes some sense.
Thanks in advance.
Just to get the dumb stuff out of the way, did you initialize the second in=
stance by running oninit -I with INFORMIXDIR set to idstraining? Does onst=
at report that the instance is online?

You have to run the .training script as a <DOT> script otherwise the
environment it modifies is a subshell which disappears when the script
finishes. So:
