informix.com
Posted in 2007
Users noticed that www.informix.com had started landing on an "Informix Product Family" page that listed U2 and Wintergate but omitted IDS (plus a "What We Officer" typo), forcing people to hunt for the IDS pages. A side complaint was that the downloaded IDS 11.10.UC1ET "developer" build was actually a time-limited evaluation copy with an expiry date, and that IBM's download links were vague. The landing page was corrected to redirect to the proper Informix software page, though it later pointed at the generic ibm.com home page; an IBM Informix business executive reportedly promised a fix by the following Monday. No resolution is recorded for the developer/evaluation licence confusion.

I see that the landing page for www.informix.com has changed. It leads to an "Informix Product Family" page which lists the data servers available under "What We Officer". Interestingly, although this has the U2 products and something called wintergate, it doesn't have IDS! Is it just me that finds this a bit odd? I've been to www.informix.com twice in the past few days to get some general product information and have had to go round the houses to get to the IDS pages.

It certainly raises questions: the prominent "what we offer" section (spelling mistake now corrected it seems) does look like an DB2 imposter as everything else on the page pertains to IDS. The View All Data servers link does display various Informix products but suggests that IDS is at best their 6th most important product as it fails to make the main page. It makes me wonder if this is just a cut and paste job from another page. Ben.
What's even more amazing is that the Developer Edition has a time bomb!
IBM just can't seem to get it right. If it's a DEVELOPER EDITION, doesn't that
imply that it's FREE of a timebomb?

Is this a developer release, I thought all developer versions were
UC1D, TC1D or FC1D, i.e. D for Developer?
with UC1ET is the 'T' for Time Trial?

The links to the download are vague at best. I thought I downloaded the developer
version. FWIW Everything about the IBM website is complicated and vague, lots and lots
of shit pages to get through. Rating it from a user-interface perspective it illicit
low confidence in any of the links that they might actually take you to another page
that is actually useful. Unless the links are specific and direct, it's anybody's guess
where to go on ibm.com for anything.

Well, whatever the problem was, it now (2007-11-27 18:34 -08:00) looks clean to me. The Informix web site now redirects you to http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix, and that looks to be a regular Informix home page (no U2, no Wintergate) with 'What We Offer'. -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2007.0914 -- http://dbi.perl.org/ publictimestamp.org/ptb/PTB-1892 tiger 2007-11-28 00:00:07 918863F9FA9A832591FFCCE458C9769131BDE24862D0318F

Yes, it's been fixed now. It was like that for at least a week though.

One can only imagine the flurry of activity as somebody woke up the webmaster from their deep sleep, passed them the wrong information, and then moved on to talk about the next round of layoffs coming at IBM. I'm even willing to bet the website is run from India, adding even more to the equation. Might even be run by the same group that puts timebombs on developer editions.

Perhaps now someone will recall the phrase I used to describe what IBM is doing with Informix. Killing it with papercuts. The chance that the DB2 site is being treated with the same lack of respect is precisely zero. -- Daniel A. Morgan University of Washington damorgan@x.washington.edu (replace x with u to respond)

The IBM Worldwide Business Exec for Informix has apparently picked this up and said it should be fixed by Monday.
