Ontape backup failing Error = 27
Posted in 2009
A cron-driven ontape disk backup on Informix OnLine 5.11 (HP-UX) aborted partway with "Error writing to tape device, Error No. = 27" (OS errno 27, file too large). Responders explained that 5.11 cannot write backup files larger than 2GB (and ulimit may lower that further), so raising the OS file-size limit wouldn't help. Suggested workarounds: set TAPESIZE below 2GB and continue the archive onto a freshly created, correctly permissioned file when prompted, or upgrade the engine (large-file support came in later releases, e.g. 5.2x). The poster chose to keep disk backups with TAPESIZE under 2GB while an upgrade was considered.

Hi, Backup is failing in Informix 5.11 on HP-UX. Ontape backup is taken from cron. The cronlog shows that the backup is started and after sometime it is cancelled. ============================================================== /usr/informix/level0.sh start Mon Sep 28 08:00:01 EDT 2009 DB -SS Database Archives Performing archive of the entire IBM INFORMIX-OnLine system. As it says, the file it is writing to is too large for the operating system: -27 File too large. An operating-system error code with the meaning shown was unexpectedly returned to the database server. Check the documentation for your operating system to find out what too large might mean in the context of the current operation. What is your OS? Also, what entry do you have in your onconfig for TAPEDEV and TAPESIZE? TAPESIZE is apparently too large because you're over running an OS limit. Also, 5.11 went out of service before Y2K, if memory serves. --EEM -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of PRABAL DAS Sent: Tuesday, September 29, 2009 8:48 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Ontape backup failing Error = 27 [17230] Hi, Backup is failing in Informix 5.11 on HP-UX. Errno 27 is: File too large OnLine 5.1x does not support files larger than 2GB for file based archives and it may be that the informix user has a ulimit restriction on it reducing that further in your environment. Ulimits at least are tunable. Art Art S. Yes the file size exceeds 2 GB
Yes the file size is larger than 2GB. Is there any way to continue disk based backup?

Change TAPESIZE to something less than 2GB, rename the file, touch a new
file and make its permissions correct, reply 'Y' to ontape/tbtape.

Hi Art Thanks for your valuable suggession. A last question, if it is possible that the SA team can increase the file size limit > 2G ( say the instance size is 5 GB) , will informix support that ? Prabal
That version of Informix will still not allow you to use a limit > 2G whether or not the OS will allow it. > To: ids@iiug.org > From: d.prabal@gmail.com > Subject: Re: Ontape backup failing Error = 27 [17251] > Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2009 10:16:04 -0400 > > Hi Art > > Thanks for your valuable suggession. > A last question, if it is possible that the SA team can increase the file size > limit > 2G ( say the instance size is 5 GB) , will informix support that ? > > Prabal > > > ******************************************************************************* > Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum. >
You're too late to ask for that. The 5.x version of the engine had the 2GB file limitation removed years ago. Install the current version and you're all set. You'll have to get support if you don't already have it. Here's where you can find more info on the current version: http://www-01.ibm.com/software/data/informix/online5/extended/announceme nt.html --EEM -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of PRABAL DAS Sent: Wednesday, September 30, 2009 9:16 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Re: Ontape backup failing Error = 27 [17251] Hi Art Thanks for your valuable suggession. Oh, right, I forgot, the OP is on 5.11. Yes, 5.2x supports large files. The OP needs to upgrade. Art Art S. Thanks to all. I'll continue disk based backup by reducing the TAPESIZE < 2GB , since upgradation decision will take some time Prabal
