The first question is why doesn't ontape -a work any more?
You need to back up those logs. Since you don't want to risk the
data, you need to get them backed up. You could change the backup
device -- /dev/null might work but would lose the data, but you
should be OK with a disk file (this is an emergency).
I've not had to do serious receovery work for 5+ years, so I might
be off target, but I think that's going to the key. Since you use
ontape, any suggestions about switching to another backup system
won't help at this point...
