OS 390 accessing Informix v9.40 on AIX
Posted in 2006
Poster wanted an OS/390 mainframe COBOL/CICS job to read an IDS 9.40 database on AIX in real time, instead of batch-copying data into DB2. Suggestions: define an ODBC connection on OS/390 (no suitable mainframe driver found); Informix Gateway works the other direction only; ESQL/COBOL isn't available for mainframe CICS. WebSphere Information Integrator with the Informix wrapper/nicknames in DB2 was proposed, but an IBMer then noted the federation servers appear to exist only for Unix/Linux/Windows, not z/OS. No working solution is recorded.

Anybody know of a way to allow an OS 390 mainframe Cobol job access to Informix v9.40 on an Aix server. I'm assuming the only way is with the Informix Gateway product ... but just wondering if someone knows of another way ... The Cobol/CICS job needs to validate a record in the Informix database ... I'm trying to avoid copying the data over with batch jobs ... or via a product like Web Methods. What I want is to be able to read the IDS database from the mainframe...that's all ... shouldn't be that difficult .... any help would be appreciated. Peter
If you can define the ODBC connection on the OS390 machine it should work. Art S. I thought about that ... not sure if an ODBC or JDBC driver exists that would run on the mainframe. Trying to figure that out ... Informix Gateway allows non-Informix DBMS too look like an Informix DBMS; it might be used to connect from an AIX box to a zSeries machine, but not AFAIK the other way around. Does your COBOL program run against a DB2 database on the mainframe too? Or is it going to run solely against the Informix database? If it uses DB2, I think there may be ways for DB2 to access IDS via a counterpart to Informix Gateway. If it uses just IDS, then the 'obvious' solution would be to use a non-existent (hypothetical) port of ESQL/COBOL. I'm pretty sure that doesn't exist - ESQL/COBOL works with Ryan-McFarland or MicroFocus COBOL only, and hasn't ever been made available on CICS that I know of. Yes ... the job currently looks at Db2 for the info...which is copied over from Informix a few times a day. They are wanting something "real time" ... Do you happen to know the name of the product that would let Informix look to Db2 as if it were part of Db2 .. the reverse to Gateway .... DB2 does have what you want. Its called the Websphere Information Integrator. Don't ask about the naming. The key is that you can install the Informix "wrapper" in DB2. That lets you define DB2 nicknames for what you want to see in the Informix database. Then you just use DB2 SQL statements to get at the live IDS data. The Informix wrapper is included in the base DB2 release beginning with DB2 v8.2, I think. No extra software to purchase. You have to do a custom install to get it however. Its not part of the typical installation. Not sure. I've asked. May take a couple days to get the answer. From what I can find, the answer is that z/OS to Unix is not there. Unix to z/OS is. The data federation servers appear to be available only for Unix/Linux/Windows.
