In version 7.2 you no longer need to create an ascending and descending index on the same key or set of keys. Any index can be accessed in either sequence. The ASC or DESC keywords are still necessary when creating a compound index in which the keys have different sorting sequences. Multiple indexes will still be supported, but you can save room and processing time in the 7.2 version by eliminating indexes which vary only on sort sequence. Currently, the reference materials do not yet reflect this new ability. The above is from the 7.2 Beta Training manual used for internal support training. I have emailed "doc@informix.com" suggesting this addition to the manuals.
