Informix-Connect to SAP R/3

I am currently trying to get the Informix Connect /ROM tools to connect over TCPIP to a SAP R/3 instance on Informix 7.23. I seem to have problems setting up the client_locale in the Informix SetNet32 (Win95 enviornment) utility. A SAP document (#27722) implies that 'The CLIENT_LOCALE variable is not set or used in the R/3 environment'. Without setting this variable I get an error message that it (DB Explorer) unable to do character conversion. When I set it to 'C', I can connect, and see the instance, but trying to view the tables/views, etc. results in an error message of 'Unable to complete character conversion because the string for the locale could not be interpereted'. Has anyone had any success getting these tools to connect to a SAP R/3 instance, and if so what paramaters did you have set in the SetNet utility.
