DAMN, WRONG AGAIN ...
Posted in 1991
Hi. I just sent some mail saying that it's easy to span the logical logs with a transaction and break OnLine. SORRY, I GOT IT WRONG (I just hate these ...). Sorry, folks. What I saw was in fact long transactions hitting the last log and being killed, followed by transactions filling the last log and blocking on read/write. At this point OnLine was shut down, with the results as described earlier (i.e., a busted OnLine system) in both cases. Unfortunately, although the cause was different from that in the original article, the symptoms sound similar (stuck in recovery on startup). The completely-busted still annoys me lots, but it looks like substantially my/our fault for not backing the logs and checking the log. So (in case you haven't noticed yet) check the log before doing the shutdown. Abuse and flames to the address below, this should definitely be worth some. Might finally teach me not to go into soapbox mode. -- Cheers - Tony. ____________________________________________________________________________ Tony Heskett: theskett@lhr-sys.ssf-sys.dhl.com | Vox: (+44) 81 747 8330 DHL Systems : Kings House, Great West Road, TW8 9HS | Fax: (+44) 81 747 0875
