Use of Informix with a 'process'-oriented application

Hello, I am a rookie to the field of 4th-generation-languages, so if you think my questions are stupid, you may be right. But there was nothing in the FAQ which related to my question, that's why I am mailing it right now. Question: I know (because I've read it in several books), that 4th-generation-languages are primarily intended to create 'data-oriented' applications. But I also understand that among the Informix-products, there exists a procedural language (4GL or 4GL-RDS), which should make it possible to develop 'procedure-oriented' applications. I am particulary thinking of a decision support system which should support certain scheduling activities on an operational level in a hospital. Because the functional specifications of the system are difficult to obtain, I am planning to use a prototyping-approach for the system development. Am I right with my presumption that it is indeed possible and even smart to develop such an application with Informix? If not: - Why not? - Any other 4th-generation-languages which are suited for the problem? If I am right: - Which products of the Informix-assortiment should I use? - What's it gonna cost me / my employer? Thanks for reading this, Robin Lopulalan e-mail: afstd004@is.twi.tudelft.nl
