I don't really know, but FWIW:
Have you tried to SET EXPLAIN ON? What did it say the SQL was doing?
Of course you could huge the TBLSPACES parameter just for grins and see
what happens. The max size is 32K. My Scientific Wild-Assed Guess about
what's happening is that the engine is creating a bunch of temp tables as
it tries to build the index, and running out of tblspace entries. (I
don't have any real knowledge about the index-building process, but it
sounds good...)
Did you run oncheck -pT? (It might not work during the build, but
it shouldn't hurt to try.)
You could also check the SMI table "systabnames" to see how many entries
it has and what they are (during the build.)
Do you have too many indexes on this table? The release notes are
supposed to tell you the maximum number of indexes allowable. That
should generate a different error message, but it's something to check.
The book "Informix Guide to 7.1 Feature Enhancements" dated May 1995, part
number 000-7748 has a chapter on creating indexes. (I did not see anything
like what you reported, but it's still there to read.)
We're using release UD1 on the DEC Alpha platform. Is UC1 the best release
for your platform? Tech support is supposed to know this. You might also
ask if there have been any patches issued for both your O/S and Informix
engine that you're missing. Sometimes you have to play one vendor against
the other to get the whole story.
That's about all I can think of...
