Public paper on IDS
Posted in 2008
Not a technical support thread: someone posted a link to an IBM IDS white paper and complained that you must register to download promotional material. Several readers found the download/registration link returned "The link which brought you here is invalid... message code: 57e". An IBM participant confirmed the registration mechanism appeared broken generally (also for DB2 articles) and said he submitted feedback via "Contact us"; no fix or working alternative is recorded. The rest is debate over registration gates, plus an apology exchange.

>> From this month's "Insider": >> Get the latest IDS white paper After a bit of blah on Informix history this white paper discusses the capabilities that set IDS apart from the competition and distinguish it from other IBM RDBMS offerings (including DB2). It also shows how IBM has recommitted itself to IDS in terms of technology investment as well as sales and marketing effort, and how customers are deriving benefits from the product. To read it go http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/information/idc-ids.html. There you will find the link at the bottom of the page. Be warned... you have to register to download it ... Why do you have to REGISTER to read positive news about Informix on IBM's website?????!!

When I read the note I presumed the poster meant the usenet-link was broken.. Which it wasn't. 2 min later I realized it was the registration and canceled the post and replaced it with the followup. Apparently too late. Either way it appears like registration is broken not only for this article, but in general. So all those worried about an anti-IDS conspiracy. The DB2 compression and SAP article which are cross linked suffer the same fate. Maybe Daniel hacked the website ;-) As to why register to download material. Why not? Do you have anything to hide? Is downloading an article about IDS kinky? Are you afraid Mark T could find out and revoke ACE from you? Cheers Serge -- Serge Rielau DB2 Solutions Development IBM Toronto Lab

Because it's just so irregular to have to download promotional material about a product you're supposed to be, er, promoting. A registration process, particularly one with questions as tedious and fuckwit as the IBM ones ("Which business problem are you seeking to address?" - "None, I just want to download the f***ng paper!!!"), is likely to deter people from bothering at all. Just another way in which the promotion of Informix is so grudging.

The DB2 compression and SAP article which are cross linked > suffer the same fate. Maybe Daniel hacked the website ;-)> > As to why register to download material. Why not?> Do you have anything to hide? Actually yes. I don't want some marketing droid pestering me. (Even though I'm on a lot of IBM's lists and still get calls from IGS/BCS dot com folks.) As to why its not a good idea... What is the goal? You want to see who's downloading your "white paper", which is another term for marketing BS, you just track the IP address of the download. (Ooops! I just gave away a sekret of how others track information about you.) (Or you can search for a cookie that was set up from another IBM related web site.) If you place a barrier, it will deter people from even wanting to look at your material. It seems that yet again, those in IBM marketing don't grok the people that they are marketing to. You want people to read your material, then you make it as *easy* as possible for them to access the material. _________________________________________________________________ Climb to the top of the charts!
