DBD:Informix

I'm trying to install DBD:Informix using the Client SDK 2.81 UC3 on RedHat Enterprise 9. I can connect to the stores7 database on another server running Informix 7.31 and pass the connectivity test, however when running the makefile.pl gives an error "Warning LD is not an known parameter" running make gives "line 1: sql command not found" Any ideas or hints as to the problem?
