Re: ORACLE VS INFORMIX

It may be a good time to branch out a bit if you are already very up on Oracle and are growing bored with it. Technically, the architecture is different, some of the terms, utilities and the "Administrative" SQL, so you'll have a decent learning curve to get through. That said, the fundamental goals of a RDBMS are basically the same, so you'll pick this up much faster than Oracle or whatever your first DBMS was.... Careerwise, the Oracle market is deeper, by a factor of somewhere between 4 and 10, depending on the specifics of what you are doing. I get the general feeling though that Informix shops take their technology more seriously, a lot of Oracle shops basically follow the herd, but that's just my personal bias talking. Most DBA's who are familiar with both prefer Informix, and will tell you it's easier and more pleasant to manage. I'm kinda going the other way, very familiar with Informix administration, expanding into Oracle. It's hard to ignore that deeper market. I'm still at the point in the curve where I mutter under my breath a lot though. I'll probably always prefer Informix given a choice. Good Luck.
