cannot open chunk errno = 6
Posted in 2009
After imaging an Informix 5.11 system onto a new HP-UX box, tbinit failed with "Cannot Open Primary Chunk '/dev/informix/rootcen', errno = 6" (no such device or address), even though the device file appeared to exist with correct informix ownership and 660 permissions. Suggestions were to check the physical disk/links/permissions, watch for PA-RISC-to-Itanium issues, and test the chunk with dd piped to od -c. dd also failed with "No such device", confirming the /dev entry was just a copied file node not tied to a real device; the sysadmin found the actual raw device was not associated with /dev/informix, which was the cause.

Hi, our Informix 5.11 server has been migrated using imaging on HP-UX hssd11 B.11.00. Images of all the F/S including raw devices have been copied in the new server also the OS version remains the same But tbinit is giving tbinit: cannot open chunk '/dev/informix/rootcen', errno = 6 tbinit: fatal error in shared memory initialization 09:30:40 Cannot Open Primary Chunk '/dev/informix/rootcen', errno = 6 09:30:40 semop failed. errno : 209:30:402, proc id 15891 Cannot Open Primary Chunk '/dev/informix/rootcen', errno = 6 09:30:40 semop failed. errno : 22, proc id 15892 whereas I can see the device is present in the new server as crw-rw---- 1 informix informix 64 0x020021 May 14 2002 /dev/informix/rootcen Any idea?
Regards. As I saw on other searches, the oserr=6 means: -------------------------------------------------- Below is an extract from the 'Error Messages' manual:- -6 No such device or address. An operating-system error code with the meaning shown was unexpectedly returned to the database server. You might have made an error when you configured the database software or in the REPORT TO clause of a report. Look for other operating-system error messages that might give more information. This would tend to indicate the 'lump' of disk to which these file/links refer is not available. Check the following:- 1. The physical disk is attached and working and not throwing any errors. 2. The links are pointing correctly to the raw partitons. 3. The raw partitions are owned by informix, group to informix and have permissions 660. Hope this helps. Did you go from PA-RISC to Itanium? That may be the problem. Or the copy failed: Try to read the chunk using dd and pipe the output through od -c. The first page of the root chunk should show the Informix copyright string. If dd fails or the contents of that first page are not right, your copy didn't work. Art Art S. Thanx I tried with dd if=/dev/informix/rootcen of /home/informix/xyz |od -c >newfile Since the chunks are directly pointing to the raw devices and here we do not use symlinks " crw-rw---- 1 informix informix 64 0x020021 May 14 /dev/informix/rootcen " Whether the above is okay since I am getting " dd: /dev/informix/rootcen No such device..."
Which OS is this again? Might want to verify that those major/minor #s are a real device or just directory entries after being copied from the other machine. It looks like the underlying physical device is no longer associated with that raw device file in /dev Art Art S. Yes, the actual device is not associated with /dev/informix, as clarified by the SA after relooking into it. Thanks for your help
