They are still laying bricks the same way since they built the Ziggurats; - but in this industry ? I can't name one Cobal or Fortran programmer who hasn't had to learn another language and is till working within the original bounds. Everything is evolving at an alarming rate. If you don't constantly update your knowledge and skills in this industry you are dead. Where is an Access 2.0 programmer going to be in 2 years if s/he doesn't know Vb and SQL Server? And 2 more years when its all moving into COM / DCOM. ? If someone doesn't constantly want to update your skills (and I'm talking 5 - 10 hours per week here) then I don't think this is the industry for them. Experience quickly becomes lethargic and redundant to be overtaken by eager youth trained in the latest and straining at the bit move on. Such is the treadmill we are on.
