Urgent! *.log

The system that I administer has a directory with two files in with .log suffix. These are updated when every data is posted. These are presumably audit trails (possibly made by third party software which was installed and never used). What is the easiest way to a) stop addition to these files b) clear these files down. My filestore is becoming full, please e-mail replies. thanks in advance. J.
