You can append using update with dbaccess. It involves a bit of a trick though. See below

from batch_type_codes
where batch_type_code = "#A";
batch_typ_cd_desc Promissory Note (Stafford/PLUS)
select trim(batch_typ_cd_desc)||" Test" col
from batch_type_codes
where batch_type_code = "#A"
into temp t_table with no log;
update batch_type_codes
set (batch_typ_cd_desc ) = ((select col from t_table ))
where batch_type_code = "#A";
select batch_typ_cd_desc
from batch_type_codes
where batch_type_code = "#A";
batch_typ_cd_desc Promissory Note (Stafford/PLUS) Test
rollback work;
