Archive; levels on different tape devices...

The tape device I use for archiving I-OL broke down and I'm not sure when it will be fixed, (a DAT dev. on a HP), so if I want to take daily backups I have to back up on a different machine and tape dev. But reading the manual suggests to me that you can not restore OL from different devices, is that correct? Should I rather take the engine off-line and unix-backup the cooked files? Gaukur.
