Informix & raw partitions

I'm new to Informix and entire db world, so please hang with me while I explain: I have Solaris 8 running with one 14GB raw partition for Informix data. I'm running Informix Dynamic Server 7.31 Installation of IDS have created rootdbs chunk on that partition for about 600MB Can I create multiple dbspaces on single raw partition? When I tried to create dbspace message appeared saying 'Chunk already exist'. Can I add multiple chunks to one raw partition? What would be an optimal solution to place databases. We have an old system that have multiple partitions and each partition is considered a single chunk (about 2GB each). Is this the proper way to go or was that done due to small disks. Can someone answer those questions and/or point me to some references that I can find the answer myself. Many thanks in advance. -- Regards, Seweryn Pietruszewski Network Administrator pietruszewski@att.com

I'm assuming that you have only one Informix instance on this server . . . . >What would be an optimal solution to place databases. >We have an old system that have multiple partitions and each partition is >considered a single chunk (about 2GB each). No problem.
You can multiple chunks per raw partition but I suspect you are getting caught by the 2GB limit. Cut up your 14 GB into smaller pieces using DiskSuite/Veritas/Format whatever Seweryn wrote: > > I'm new to Informix and entire db world, so please hang with me while I > explain: > > I have Solaris 8 running with one 14GB raw partition for Informix data. > I'm running Informix Dynamic Server 7.31 > Installation of IDS have created rootdbs chunk on that partition for about > 600MB > > Can I create multiple dbspaces on single raw partition? The old system, of necessity, used lots of small (2GB) chunks. If you were to upgrade to IDS 9.40.UC2 (or 9.40.UC1, I suppose, but why upgrade to a back version), then you would be able to use chunks bigger than 2GB, with offsets bigger than 2GB. Then you could create one or two chunks in your 14GB partition. -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2003.04 -- http://dbi.perl.org/
