Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
User on SCO OpenServer 5.0.5 with IDS 7.31UC7 and ISM 2.2 got NetWorker "RPC error, Unable to send" / "Send Chunk to MMD failed, Bad file number" when running onbar -b against ~10GB of data, with bar_act.log showing the process killed by signal 13 (SIGPIPE). Respondents questioned the command syntax (-l vs -L 0), asked for bar_act.log details and storage-manager configuration, and suggested isolating the fault by backing up a small database to an ISM disk directory instead of tape. The poster reported small backups and restores work fine; no resolution for the large backup is recorded.

OS: sco openserver 5.05
The storage software: ism2.2
I excute onbar -b -l 0
error:
NetWorker: RPC error, Unable to send
NetWorker: Send Chunk to MMD failed, Bad file number
Hi,
I guess you somehow have to decide what you
want to do :
onbar -b -l # use this command to backup logical log files
or
onbar -b -L 0 # use this command to do a level zero archive
but to me "onbar -b -l 0" seems a bit ambiguous.
You didn't say which version you're using
(version of IDS and ON-Bar - try "onbar -V" to find out),
and you probably should check the ON-Bar activity log
file for error messages from ON-Bar.
E.g. try (possibly as user informix) something like :
awk '$1 ~ /BAR_ACT_LOG/ {print $2}' ${INFORMIXDIR}/etc/${ONCONFIG} |
xargs tail -20
Regards,
Martin

nsrmmd #1: pid 6302 frag size 538976288, invalidating connection

Process 1658 received signal 13. Process will exit after cleanup.
Due to the previous error, logical restore will not be attempted.
Thanks in advance for your help.!
Have you
configured the storage manager? - devices, users etc.
What does the onbar log (bar_act.log) say?
Do you have any issues with any process or database in the Informix
instance?
Why do you use onbar and not ontape?

Hi
It's not clear if you were doing a backup or restore since the beginning of
the message mentioned executing "onbar -b" for backup, then the bar_act.log
had 2 lines which indicate a restore. The signal 13 mentioned is some kind
of pipe error SIGPIPE. So, I'm not sure what's happening.
It may be worthwhile to configure onbar to interface with a local ism disk
directory (disable the tape device, disable the NetWorker, and disable the
actual storage manager). Clean up the bar_act.log and BAR_DEBUG_LOG (if
enabled), and daemon.log, then create a small database and try running the
backup (onbar -b) and see if those messages are still present. At this
point, it could be some kind of environment setup problem, tape device
problem, NetWorker problem, storage manager (Legato?) problem, or onbar
problem.
So, hopefully, this will help isolate the problem.
thanks. Davis.
