Why port Informix to Linux? Why bother responding to this? Two of the most important reasons Linux is so great: 1. NO licensing costs of the OS. 2. Complete source code of the OS. I'm grabbing Bob Young, President of Red Hats' comments here, but they really say it all. Granted, many of you out there in the comp.databases.informix community couldn't care less about Linux. It may not appear on the surface to mean much. But once you get a copy, and see the value you would otherwise have to pay BIG money for with commercial UNIX vendors, you begin to see the possibilities. Putting Informix on Linux is simply, "Buy the data base, get the OS for FREE!". And it's not just an OS, but one of the most efficient versions of UNIX ever distributed. Imagine the possibilities. Linux is one of the best print servers, one of the best OSes, and one of the best web servers. This was the proclamation by three independent trade magazines. Linux only needs a great, commercial data base and the industry is in for a big change. Ask your MIS department head how much they spend each year on OS licensing. Linux could save you big money and at the same time provide you with a really efficient UNIX. We're making sloooooow progress with this, but you can help to make it a reality by presenting a good business case for it and mail it to tonyv@informix.com .
