Re: New Era recomendations
Posted in 1997
After using New Era from version 1.0 up to 2.0, I found it to be inferior to the tools I have previously used (SQLWindows, Powerbuilder, Delphi 1.0). This made me push for an evaluation of other products that could possibly replace New Era. After evaluating a number of products over the last several months and comparing them to what I have used over the last three years, here are the relative ratings I came up with (in order of preference): 1. VisualAge for Smalltalk V3.0 (part of evaluation process) 2. Delphi 2.0 (part of evaluation process) 3. Delphi 1.0 (based on previous use and also selected as part of evaluation process because we won't be moving to NT, if at all, until well into 1998) 4. SQLWindows V?.? (the last 16-bit version; based on experience from previous consultancy) 5. Powerbuilder V3.? (based on experience from previous consultancy). 6. New Era 2.0 Basically, I found New Era's development environment to be the most anemic, especially when compared to VisualAge and Delphi (2.0). I also found New Era's edit/compile/link/test/debug cycle to be extremely slow when compared to VisualAge (which was virtually nil) and to Delphi (both 1.0 and 2.0, which were extremely fast). I found Powerbuilder's Datawindow to be superior to New Era's Supertable. Finally, New Era was the most unstable of them all. Give me a holler if you wish more details.
