Must a single user really have both capabilities in the same remote window? Can't you do data entry and reporting in different windows? Granted that I'm not using precisely the same tools that you are; but I have been able to provide restricted update and general reporting to my users by having a "generic" user-id invoked by people doing remote reporting, while update users must connect directly to the server machine (even if only by rlogin) and use their actual user-id for database connect.
