HPUX 10.20-7.22 Restore problems

We have an HPK250, single processor, 160 meg mem, Informix 7.22. When I try to restore from a level 0 archive tape, the machine hangs completely. We have to use "the big switch" to reboot. Tried several configs - up to 64000 initial virtual, cutting down the off recovery threads, changing the kernel. It seems as though the server is grabbing additional virtual segments until the machine hangs. If I set the SHMTOT to prevent the server from adding segments, the restore fails because it cannot get more segments. Any ideas? Please respond while I still have hair.
