(Note: This message was originally posted on Feb 26th but did not appear on this forum due to a technical problem. It has therefore been reposted. - Forums Administrator) Is anyone using this version? It is supposed to fix frequent assert failures under 7.31.UD6, however IBM says things like "limited quality assurance", "limited testing", "not intended for long-term use" and "its use presents inherent risks". This was back in November, so had we upgraded to it, we would have been on it for over 3 months now. (What is "long-term"?). They also advise that we use a "reproduction script in a test environment prior to deployment", etc... Well, of course, I have no idea what exact conditions are required to generate the assert failures in our current environment. They just happen. Usually they just seem to affect 1 user, but we've had 1 instance where it brought the entire engine down. Needless to say, I'm wondering which version we should stick with. We're running this on AIX 4.3.3 using 4js BDL 3.50.01.01. Thanks,
Hi, a version with "Wx" (where x is a number) appended to it is a so called code drop version. This means it is not an official GA version like 7.31.UD6 and 7.31.UD7. A code drop version is tested to some extent, but not fully tested as the GA versions are. It is a way to give specific customers who have a specific problem a product where this problem is fixed, even though the fix is not yet GA (but will be in the next official GA version). Therefore such customers can use this and do not have to wait for next GA. However, since there was limited testing, there are certain risks (which nobody can tell you because of the limited testing). According to the tests that are done on a code drop version, it is considered good. But the unknown is about the tests that have not been run. And this is why Technical Support is telling you about these possible risks. By now it should be a bit more clear, what is meant by "not for long-term use". Explicitely that means that a code drop version should only be used until the next official GA version is out. At this point you are expected to get the official GA version and upgrade to it, rather than hanging on to the code drop version. In any case, if you still hang on to it even though an official version has been made available already - when you hit a problem and call Technical Support, the first thing they will tell you is to upgrade. Since IDS 7.31.UD7 is available (as far as I know since 01/20/2004), you should have upgraded to that version by now. AFAIK, v7.31.UD7 may not be available for AIX 4.3.3.
We installed 7.31.UD6 and upgraded to W1 in order to fix an ontape / shared
memory issue.
