Mass Storage Solution
Posted in 1995
Hi all, There was some inquiry a while back on the subject of mass storage of databases as well as file systems. I just finished evaluating this vendor and would like to share my results: Hardware support requirements: CD-ROM jukes, WORM, rewritable optical devices Software support requirements: HP/UX, Solaris 1.X and 2.X, ULTRIX, Windows NT Here are some of their potentials: 1) Rewritable media are managed in a way as to avoid the trashing of the jukebox mechanism. Single file system can be as big as 2 terabytes and files can be as big as 2 gigabytes! Both can span platters and disks! 2) WORMs can be written as needed until the entire platter is full. Normally, if even one bit is written to a WORM, the entire platter cannot be written to again. Again, single file system can be as big as 2 terabytes and files can be as big as 2 gigabytes! Both can span platters and disks! 3) Their generic device driver can support different media types (i.e., CD-ROMs, WORMs, rewritable optical devices) simulteanously. 4) Their HyperROM (TM) file systems supports more than 500 CDROMS without massive platter-changing via metadata stored on hard disks. 5) No need for HSM. 6) Unlimited hard disk cache. 7) OEMs for Panasonic, Digital, Pioneer, and NEC I think that they also support AIX (IBM). They were very happy to give me a free demo software for evaluation. With this product, I didn't even need Informix-Optical to perform my db access. I simply accessed it as if it was another file system. I still would like to get real numbers wrt access times, but so far with caching, its pretty close to hard disk times. I will keep you posted. Tracer Technologies can be contacted at (301) 216-2759. Hope this helps. ############################################################## David Nguyen Internet: davidn@geis.geis.com GE Information Services UUCP: uunet!ge!davidn 401 North Washington Street Voice: 1-301-340-5461 Rockville, MD 20850 USA ##############################################################
