server migration from windows to linuxu
Posted in 2012
User asked whether chunk files (or backups) from Informix 11.7 on Windows 2008 64-bit could simply be copied/restored onto Linux 64-bit. Consensus from several respondents: no — chunk and archive formats are platform-specific (different page sizes, binary layouts), so it's unsupported and shouldn't be attempted. Recommended migration methods instead: dbexport/dbimport, HPL, cross-server INSERT INTO ... SELECT from db@remoteserver:table, Art Kagel's myutils migration tools, or Enterprise Replication to minimise downtime. The poster thanked the group.

hello: my doubt is about chunks. can i copy chunk files from windows to linux? can linux manage right chunk files from windows? my doubt is about to export data fully with two informix v11.7 from windows 2008 64b to linux 64b. thank you and regards. --047d7bb04cf2188a3904d02c3322
Hi,
I dont think so, the binary format is platform specific, same as the backup
format.
So there is no ability to restore a windows archive to a linux machine.
In order to migrate an instance to linux, you should dbexport/dbimport or use
a HPL.

This is not possible, nor can you take an archive and restore. Three
options:
1. dbexport/import
2. Enable both servers to 'see' each other then on server L,
INSERT INTO table ttt SELECT * from db@serverW:ttt3. Use Art's data migration utilities from myutils.
The data Migration Guide is you r friend :-)

Officially, this will not work. In practice will it work? Don't know. I wouldn't try it for any database instance that i care about Art Art S. Hello, I doubt it, and would never try to figure it out. Windows file/binary treatment are different from Linux. If you want to minimize your downtime, ER replication would be a good way to do it. 11.70 has several good features to do ER in different archs, and informix versions. Regards.
