Dennis:
The first select is finding all records from table a where the id column IS NOT IN
table b.
The second select is finding all records in a (id), and only the id_name
from b where the id in a = the id in b.
Not knowing the full table layout, and what he wants to accomplish, I hope this
answers your question?

I think these 2 should be different, shouldn't they? The first one selects
a.id's which are not in b, and the second one selects a.id's that are in b.
Was there a typo in your original post, or just a brain warp on the syntax
(happens to everyone, I get at least 4 a day).
