Cognos software
Posted in 2014
A user asked whether Informix really bundles a free Cognos license, which edition it comes with, where to download it, and whether Cognos can run on a separate server. The thread answered it: the 5-user Cognos BI (10.2, not Express) licenses are included with the Advanced editions (Advanced Enterprise and Advanced Workgroup/Growth, i.e. those with IWA), with Advanced Enterprise also adding an SPSS Modeler seat. The Cognos server itself isn't included and must be licensed separately, usage is contractually restricted to Informix data, downloads come via PPA, and Cognos, Informix and IWA can each sit on separate machines. Installation needs a server-side package (Connection, Report Studio, Viewer, etc., fronted by Apache) plus a Windows package with Framework Manager and Map Manager.

Hello. I am becoming crazy, for sure, or did I hear, some time ago, that Informix would start coming together with a Cognos license, free of charge, for using together with Informix? Would it be a Cognos Express license? How can I download it? Does it have some users (admins/final users) limit? Could some friend please clarify, if this info is true, how would be the Cognos product available, and if that could be installed in a dedicated server, separated from Informix/IWA, or not (which I would even expect not to be)...? And also where could I download it? It does not appear in my PPA account. There I can find only this partnum: IBM Cognos Now! OEM v4.5.2 for Multiplatform Multilingual eAssembly(CR8DJML) Is this "the one"? I´ve never seen it before in PPA. Thanks a lot, regards.
Thanks, and sorry. I´ve just found what I wanted to know. "Value-added packaging includes access to select Cognos software." That mentions Cognos BI, which I think would be the best option for Cognos to work with IWA. Thanks a lot for your attention.
Wow wow, wait a minute! Informix Editions document for version 12 mentions that a 5 user license is available / included, for Advanced versions. That´s nice! Alexandre: Here's the deal as I understand it: If you purchase Advanced Enterprise Edition (which is the Enterprise edition that includes IWA and storage optimization) you get five Cognos user desk licenses (full version not express) and one SPSS Data Modeler user desk license. That does not include the Cognos server, so you have to already be a licensed Cognos user to take advantage of this boon. Similarly the Advanced Growth Edition (so Growth Edition plus IWA - no storage optimization) you get the five Cognos licenses but not the SPSS license. Hello Alexandre, Cognos is included only in Informix Advanced Enterprise Edition and Informix Advanced Workgroup Edition. In this two editions, you have 5 licences Cognos. Cognos can be installed on a dedicated server. Cognos, Informix and IWA can be installed on 3 different servers, if you wish it !! That works well. In your PPA, if you have the Informix Advanced Edition, you can normally download all the product Cognos version 10.2. Totally agree with that. I just want to add that COGNOS cannot be used with other sources such as Oracle (contractuel limitation and not technical) . It is supposed to be used ONLY with the Informix Engine. There are actually 2 packages that need to install: *- 1 package on the server side that includes the following components:* bi_svr_10.2_xxxxxl.tar.gz for linux > 1. Cognos Connection > 2. Cognos Administration > 3. Report Studio > 4. Cognos Viewer > 5. Cognos Workspace > 6. Cognos Workspace Advanced > 7. Event Studio This package inludes everything that is needed to create your reports using the Report Studio and use them using the Cognos Viewer The Cognos server needs to be launched thru APACHE or another web server; we tested it with APACHE and it works perfectly.. _*The informix Advanced editions do allow you to have 5 user licences but the Cognos Server side of things needs to be purchased separately So you basically need to purchase the COGNOS package and have 5 user licences for free to access the database using IWA. If you need more, and it most of the time the case, you need to purchase more user licences. *_ *- 1 package on the windows side that includes the following components:* fm_10.2_xxxxx.tar.gz > 8. Framework Manager > 9. Map Manager The Framework manager is needed to create the logical grouping of tables (kind of like the UNIVERSE in Business Object). This is needed to be able to create the reports . The *map manager *is only used if you need to include maps in your reports. Hope that this helps fill in the whole created by this unclear offering.
