can you rlogin from client to server? if you asked for password, problem
with you DNS cfg (reverse translation)

1) check DNS - reverse resolution. say, nslookup xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,
there xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is ip adress of the client, connecting to Online
if NS respond with error, correct in-addr.arpa zone.
2) if the above works, check if user on client's hosts has home on server host
and there are no .rhost there (or add domain name to that .rhosts)
3) there was a bug (as far as i remeber, in Online - but who knows?) - if your
full qualified domain name is longer than 16 symbols you get -956 or core :)
make sure your SE is innocent in that aspect - reduce full name to 15 symbols.
for instance, change your remote client's node name to the minimum length
so it won't be longer that 16 symbols name+domain.
if that is the problem, i could suggest you - make cannonical
names short, add CNAME entries with the desired neames.
use short names to make informix auth. subroutine happy.
exmpl:
very-long-name IN A 121.12.33.44
change to:
v IN A 121.12.33.44
very-long-name CNAME v
good luck!
