Informix builds a temp table to perform the exist. Although the rows in the temp table are not logged it still logs creation of extents. This is mentioned in the release notes. We have questioned Informix about this and they were not prepared to accept it as a bug. They said that the engine needs to log allocation of all extents to be able to recover.
