Hi
I am trying to bring up the server 8.21.UD3-1 under SUN Ultra Enter 5000
Solaris 2.6 with single coserver or like IDS 7.xx, facing following
problem. But looking at knowledgeble unresolvable responses from
the'-----------' technical staff, I had no other choice but to POST it
here.
Thanks in advance
GM

Assert Failure log file :-
16:48:23 build_smi:mt_exec failed, status 256, errno 0
16:48:23 Verify the following: - you are running as 'informix' or 'root'
- $INFORMIXDIR/etc/buildsmi exists
- $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sysmaster.sql exists
- dbaccess is runnable and will connect to your server
- you can write to the file '/tmp/buildsmi.4576'
===================================================================
See '/tmp/buildsmi.4576' as follows :
This file is the output of the dbaccess command in the shell script,
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/buildsmi. This script is run when Informix OnLine
DSA is first initialized. It builds the database and tables
which support the System Monitoring Interface. If you were directed
to see this file, a problem probably occurred while building the
database and/or its tables and views. See below for more information
regarding any problems.
Problems may have occurred if OnLine was shutdown after initialization
but before the entire database was created. If this was the case,
login as 'informix', rerun 'oninit', and wait for the message
"'sysmaster' database created successfully"
to appear in the OnLine message log before shutting down. Once it is
created successfully, it should never need to be recreated.
No Coservers, aborting

I have not loaded XPS, however, in loading 7.2x and 7.3x I have often
had build_smi fail, both in new servers and in upgrades. The log
message suggests shutting down and restarting and sometimes this works,
but not often. I have found that it is only necessary to run the
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/buildsmi (no underscore in spite of the log message)
as Informix and it will drop any partial SYSMASTER database and create
a new one no harm done. This has worked everytime but once when I had
to destroy the old SYSMASTER by hand and create a new one then run the
sysmaster.sql scritp after removing the create database statement. All
of this is harmless, even did buildsmi once with users on the system
(OK it was just the development machine, I may be crazy but I do like
my job, or at least having one).
