dbaccess tool
Posted in 2006
A user wanted dbaccess and dbschema on developer client machines, but found they aren't part of the CSDK install, and simply copying the binaries over failed. Art Kagel explained these are server-package tools and suggested IIUG alternatives: sqlcmd (dbaccess-like, command line only) and myschema (dbschema replacement). Others recommended Marco Greco's SQSL (CLI and curses, dbaccess-style menus), AGS Server Studio JE, and Aubit4GL's dbaccess clone. The poster reported that copying the msg/ and forms/ directories along with the executables made them work, though Art warned this likely breaches the licence.

I would like DBACCESS and DBSCHEMA tools being installed on client
machines to let developers checking database.
But I did not see the executables( dbaccess, dbschema) there after I
insatlled CSDK on the client machines.
I copied them from db server machine to the client machines, but it does
not work.
How can I get it there?
Thanks
Quman
Dbaccess and dbschema are part of the database server package. You cannot
install them on client machines. You CAN however, get very similar open source
utilities from the IIUG Software Repository (www.iiug.org/software):
IBM Tool IIUG Equivalent Repsitory Package
dbaccess sqlcmd sqlcmd-80.00
dbschema myschema utils2_ak
sqlcmd implements a query tool including all dbaccess 'info' commands, but only
the command line interface (ie: dbaccess mydatabase - ) no menus.
myschema implements all dbschema features except -hd with many extensions,
enhancements and (if I must say so myself) improvements.

Thanks Art.
I have another workaround would like to share.
(1) copy two directories: msg/ and forms/ to client machine and
(2) copy dbaccess and dbschema executables
It works wonderful!

Or get SQSL also available from the IIUG software repository or my humble
site. cli & curses interface available and loads more goodies

Check out Server Studio JE from AGS, Ltd. A basic version is included with
IDS. The full version has far more features than DBAccess, including
stored procedure debugging, sql syntax checking, data editing grids,
visual object navigation, ER diagrams (version 6), built-in reports
(extents, etc.), test data generation, schema diff between instances,
single log-in for multiple instance, and so much more.
www.serverstudio.com. It is a Java application so it runs on multiple
platforms.
Note, I am just a satisfied user.

Sure if you don't mind violating your license agreements. Not my choice. Check
out Marco Greco's SQSL package also. It uses ESQL/C to emulate dbaccess
including menu modes. I always forget that one.

Just for completeness - Aubit4GL has a dbaccess "clone" (asql_i.4ae - aka
adbaccess)
Currently works well for Informix and postgres (asql_p.4ae).
