Re: Informix on NT

Stephen Ford <sford@admin4.hsc.uth.tmc.edu> offerred: +We are currently running Informix Online Dynamic Server to support a DSS +environment on a UNIX platform. +Our management is considering getting getting Informix Online Dynamic Server for +WindowsNT and moving our DSS environment over to the NT platform. I don't know +how stable Informix is on NT. + +IS THIS A GOOD IDEA? This is, to a large extent, a VERY subjective question. So any answer you get will really depend greatly on the experiences and prejudices of the poster. That said: I would say IDS/NT, at least as of version 7.3, is pretty much as stable as NT itself. That is to say, if you can tolerate NT, IDS will be up to your standards. If you are used to a Unix env and run IDS there, you may find IDS/NT to be somewhat less than rock-solid. However, I would be very cautious about trying to put the typical DSS system onto NT. These are typically large databases requiring a lot of horsepower. I'm just not convinced that NT, with any db server, is up to that task. Perhaps a moderately sized datamart would do ok, but not a full-blown datawarehouse/DSS system. I have yet to see any convincing evidence that NT scales beyond 4 processors, and for ideal DSS performance, you want a lot of parallelism. Again, this is very subjective, and the above represents my opinion, not any absolute fact (i.e. YMMV).
