How to retain tariling spaces in VARCHAR?

Informix Gurus, Is there a way to retain trailing spaces in a VARCHAR field? The trailing spaces are explicitly inserted, but on a select, the spaces are gone. Leading spaces however, are retained. Any and all responses on this matter appreicated. Thanx, Raj.
