4glWorks makes it to the web
Posted in 1997
The moment you all have been waiting for has finally come (is it laughter I hear in the background? :-). I've pulled my strings together and assembled a 4glworks distribution (for the few uninformed, 4glWorks is my fab application framework for Informix-4gl) to show the world before Informix-4gl makes it to the list of dead languages. You can download it from http://www.ctonline.it/~marcog/4glworks.htm (Yes, Billy, you can actually give a look at the code without shelling out any money :-) Now, you may say, why would I want to download such a beast? I already went to the funeral! Well, to start with, being a small port to 4gl of an event driven system, it differs slightly from most of the 4gl code around, and as such, IMVBO, is well worth at least a quick look. Consider it C/S archeology :-) Next, there's quite a lot that can be taken out of it, like pull down menus, single and multiple selection pick lists, language independent text messages, report enhancements, pipes & plain files io, a 4gl precompiler and more. In fact, I've extracted from it a few modules (not many), which you can find at http://www.ctonline.it/~marcog/misc.htm I'll add more in the near (ha ha ha) future. I assume that the fact that *I* wrote 4glWorks is of no importance to you, but I'll throw this among the reasons to download it all the same :-) Of course, 4glWorks has largely beneficiated from two years worth of advice from many cdi contributors. Sadly, since I've decided to give shape to my web site (some six months ago), all sorts of things have happened that have distracted me from polishing / completing 4glWorks V2 and writing my pages. As a result, Marco on the Web is being written during not so frequent stolen fractions and at the time of this writing misses most of the 4glWorks reference manual. I am confident, however, that this minor inconvenience will not affect in any way the possibility to fully appreciate the tool.
