Prior to moving to a data center (few months back) my backups were to
Ultrium 3's. I could backup 330 gigs in 2 hrs (HP 11.11 IDS 9.40 ,7420).
Before the move to Ultriums I was using DLT 320's with the backup taking 5+
hrs.

Another way that I did before was to change the tape backup device from DLT
to LTO if your budget is allowed.
It greatly reduces the backup time for us.
