Question: IDS restore script (ontape)
Posted in 2008
A user on IDS 9.40 (Solaris) wanted a non-interactive restore and tried feeding answers to 'ontape -r' via echo/pipe and here-documents, but the process appeared to hang after the 'Continue restore?' and 'back up the logs?' prompts. Suggestions included using the expect utility (or C code, e.g. Art Kagel's utils3_ak ALARMPROGRAM example) to drive the prompts, and monitoring progress via onstat -u/-x or the message log. Martin Fuerderer noted the physical restore runs silently and takes time, with further prompts (level-1, logs) to come. The poster later confirmed he simply hadn't waited long enough - his piped-input script worked.

Hi, All!
I would like to create ontape based restore script without interactive. I
tried three ways:
1. echo '\\
y \\
n \\
n \\
' | ontape -r
2. ontape -r <<!
y
n
n
!
3. ontape -r <<EOF
y
n
n
EOF
The result was the same:
Please mount tape 1 on /bkpmnt/bkp/t1 and press Return to continue ...

Hi,
I once tried something similar (sorry, I do not have the script any
more, was in a former company) and was successful by using the expect
utility.
Something like:
spawn ontape -r
expect "restore?"
send y\\\\r
expect "logs?"
send n\\\\r

Hi!
Hmm. after the question "Do you want to backup the logs" when answered
with "n" (no),
ontape goes and starts the restore. This may well take some time. You will
not get
any "messages" while the physical restore of dbspaces is taking place.
So are you sure that really nothing is happening? Or could it be that the
restore
actually is running and you are just not patient enough to wait for the
next prompt?
The next prompt would be whether you have any level-1 backup to restore
...
And after that comes the prompt for logs to restore - so I guess you are
anyway
missing one "n" in your input (assuming you don't want to restore logical
log files).
You can also see in the IDS message log whether there is any progress with
the
restore. There's not too much to see between start and finish of physical
restore
of the dbspaces, but at least you'd know whether something happens at all,
or
whether you are done with physical restore and ontape is waiting for your
answer
regarding log restore ...
Regards,
Martin

Hi,
you can monitor the restore from another informix session using
onstat -uor
onstat -x
You should see some activity e.g. increasing counters for written pages.
Have you checked the message log file (MSGPATH) - if you get errors they might
be logged there.

Expect is VERY good for applications like this, it can be done in Perl
also but it's not as straight forward as using Expect. Another option:
if you're into writing "C" code you can use the ALARMPROGRAM event
handler in my package utils3_ak as a template. It contains code to run
and manage an ontape -a session which may contain multiple prompts. I
wrote it before I could get management sign off for installing TCL &
Expect on production systems.

Yes, you are right. I hadn't to wait enough time.
The script is working.
